The Patten-Malouf House
tFreda Thornton Architect This is the earlier of two houses which Freda has designed for the open grazing land to the north-east of Lake Glenmaggie, which is located in Gippsland to the south-east of Melbourne. The design allows for the use of recycled beams and mud brick within a lively and original conception of form and space. The relationship between internal Living and Dining areas and the shady outside eating terrace on the north, and the verandah on the west, is particularly successful and creates a gorgeous setting for enjoying meals, chatting with friends or dozing off on a lazy afternoon. The house has many environmentally sustainable technologies, such as a Clivus Multrum composing toilet and rainwater storage. One of Freda's joys in designing is to detail all the junctions of rafters, joists, beams, pergolas, decks, verandahs, canopies, railings, joinery, and even how the front door is put together! The result is a deeply convincing aesthetic integrity which gives pleasure regardless of whether it has just been finished, or has aged gracefully for years.
