The Foote-Robinson Extension

Architect Freda Thornton

Is this a new house or a renovation and extension? Freda's style is so deeply rooted in the conventions of Australian domestic architecture that it is almost an irrelevant question. In fact you could be forgiven for wondering if this project is an example of a 'lost' period known as Freda-style!

But the architect herself is not concerned with such classifications: the goal is always to produce a beautiful place to enjoy life. In this case, the task was to provide for the needs of a family with young children by adapting a single-storey house with lovely views to the Yarra river at the bottom of their riverside block.

Internally, rich colours provide a backdrop for a mixture of light and dark timbers, silver metal, copper and stone. Outside, cypress pine fencing and cedar fretwork will turn a silver grey over time, while coloured render and red brick will key in with plant colours.
