A bit of background
This is not a large impersonal
firm. In fact it is so small that it is sometimes only two people,
Simon and Freda. But most of the time there are a few others around
to help.
Most of the work you will see
is small in scale because both partners enjoy forming close personal
contacts with their clients, and are not afraid to deal with such
issues as the location of a cutlery drawer. On the other hand, we
are happy to consider projects as large as institutional buildings,
factories, libraries and community centres.
As you will notice, each
project has the destinctive flavour of the author - Freda's designs
are identifiable immediately by her individual language of detail
and her gentle form-making, while each of Simon's projects adopts
an entire style or aesthetic to serve the underlying design concept.
Ancient
history
Simon and Freda met at Melbourne
University while studying Architecture, and after circling around
each other for about a year finally realised that they were deeply
in love, and might as well get it all on. That was in the seventies
when things were different. In subsequent years, to keep this short,
they started a practice together, had two lovely dogs, then two
lovely children, and by now have completed many dozens of exquisite
buildings for satisfied customers. Most of these have been houses
or extensions, but there have also been office and school buildings,
and Freda has also maintained an interest in landscape design. While
this all represents a formidable specialisation, they are always
willing to branch out and design NEW THINGS!!.
Their office is located
at the rear of their house in leafy Alphington, a few kilometres
to the north-east of central Melbourne, but like most architects
they are keen to work anywhere, including Ecuador and Bucharest,
providing that YOU pay the air fares (and the carbon credits)!
Now that we've got that
over, it's time to click on any one of the fascinating projects
listed on the left side of your screen. You can contact us at simonthornton@smartchat.net.au
